Andrew was one of those rare people whose presence made the room steadier, kinder and somehow more meaningful. To speak of him only as a distinguished Shakespearean actor, teacher and mentor, though true, is far from sufficient. Andrew was also a man of great humanity. He brought to every stage he graced a fierce and passionate intelligence, a deep emotional truth and a reverence for language. But beyond his distinguished career, there was the man we were privileged to know as a friend, a colleague and a fellow trustee: generous, principled, witty, wise and unfailingly compassionate.

He cared deeply about actors, not only in their triumphs but also in their struggles and vulnerabilities. He listened intently. He spoke thoughtfully. He showed up.

There was something wonderfully Shakespearean about Andrew, himself: a breadth of spirit, a quickness of mind, and a profound understanding of human contradiction. He knew that courage and tenderness go hand in hand. He knew that laughter often sits alongside sorrow. He knew that reverence can dance with glorious irreverence.

Many will recall his outstanding performances and commanding stage presence. We will also remember those qualities. And we remember with great affection the twinkle in his eye, the kindness of his counsel, and the warmth of his friendship. We will remember a man who made others feel seen when it mattered most.

He showed us that one can strive for excellence without vanity, exert influence without arrogance, and lead without severity. He reminded us that a life in the arts can be not only successful but also deeply meaningful.

We grieve his loss, but we also give thanks for his fellowship, his wisdom, his laughter and his steadfast belief in the value of our profession and the people within it.

In the truest sense, Andrew played his part magnificently.
