Spotlights & Shadows: Our Landmark New Report Is Here
We have commissioned groundbreaking new research which, for the first time, provides a comprehensive picture of the UK’s acting and stage management profession — including those working (and looking for work) on stage and screen.
This landmark report reveals a large and diverse workforce facing widespread and persistent challenges, many of which remain invisible and inadequately addressed by existing support systems.
The findings make one thing clear:
This is a profession with real and urgent need.

What the Research Reveals
This new study highlights the reality facing thousands of professionals across the acting and stage management community:
- Widespread financial instability and unpredictable income
- High levels of stress, anxiety, and poor mental wellbeing
- Isolation and loneliness is one of the most commonly reported challenges among actors and stage management
Despite their central role in the UK’s thriving creative industries, actors and stage managers are often working without the safety nets many other professions rely on.
Why This Report Matters Now
The UK’s performing arts industry contributes billions to the economy and plays a vital role in cultural life. Yet the individuals who bring stories to life are often working under conditions that are financially and emotionally unsustainable.
This report shines a light on the hidden realities of the profession and provides critical evidence needed to drive change.
It also reinforces the importance of the work carried out by Actors’ Trust — supporting those who dedicate their lives to the stage and screen.
