Remembering Dame Penelope Keith (1940-2026)

Actors’ Trust is deeply saddened by the death of Dame Penelope Keith, former President of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund.

Dame Penelope’s enormous contribution as president of the Actor’s Benevolent Fund (ABF) for over 30 years cannot be overstated. As President, she brought unwavering commitment, compassion, and generosity to the charity, helping to champion its work and support countless members of the acting profession through times of hardship.

We are immensely grateful for her compassion and dedication to the charity, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

The following tributes reflect the admiration, affection, and gratitude felt by those who knew and worked with Dame Penelope, remembering not only her remarkable achievements but also the kindness, warmth, and generosity that touched so many lives.

A Remembrance of Dame Penelope Keith

“I had the great privilege of meeting Dame Penelope in person on two occasions, and both remain among the most treasured memories of my experience with the Fund. She had a way of making you feel, however briefly you spoke, that she was genuinely glad to have met you. And, of course, she was very, very witty.

For many years, I received a birthday card from Dame Penelope, sent each year in her capacity as President of the Fund. I know I was not alone in this, I understand many of us who had come to the Fund in hard times were remembered in this small, kind way, year after year. Those cards told me that I mattered, and that someone at the very top of an institution meant to support actors like me had not forgotten. I kept every one.

She was truly charming and generous with her time. Her generosity never felt obligatory, but something she genuinely wanted to offer. Her name gave the Fund quiet authority, while her personal attention and remembrance of those it served made a lasting difference to many actors and stage managers.

Thank you, Dame Penelope, for everything you gave — to me, and to so many others in this profession who needed it. My thoughts are with her friends and family. May she rest in peace”

A Tribute to Dame Penelope Keith, President of the Actors’ Benevolent Fund

“It is with deep sadness we mourn the death of Dame Penelope Keith, also fondly known as Penny.

Penny was an outstanding figure to lead the business of the highly successful actors’ charity, founded by Sir Henry Irving. Sir Henry was the most celebrated actor in the Edwardian and Victorian Theatre and the first to receive a knighthood thus turning our business into a respectable profession.

As a member of the cast of Mrs Dales Diary, I knew Penny as our greatest fan and took part in a programme about the Dales, organised and presented by Penny in Brighton. She made it a truly fun trip interviewing us all with warmth and wit.

It was the same with her AGMs. She would arrange them at the RAC club in Pall Mall, present the business matter in her own comedic style and there was always a star comedian to add to the party flavour. Penny always knew each member and supporter by name and always went above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome.

Penny attended the Webber Douglas Academy emporium in the heart of Kensington Chelsea where she did her training. Following with work in the RSC and the National. But it was in the TV shows where she became deeply beloved and made her name. Penny became known with her upper-class accent and height, an obvious role to be used for comic effect, but her humour, warmth and wit took on the joke and turned her into the heroine we all fell in love with. Farewell and rest in peace Dame Penny. You are so missed.”
